Library of Congress vs. Dewey Decimal
II. Modified Dewey
Decimal System - LDS
The
Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UTAH, is the
world's
largest Genealogy Library, with the adjacent
FamilySearch™ Center.
Floor Plans,
Record Collections and
Catalog are unique, according
to
Roger Magneson, at the LDS Family History
Library, as reported
in the Utah Library Association -Technical
Services Round Table
2002, by Melanie Shaw. "In the LDS Family
History Library,
subject classification is usually by area using a modified
Dewey
Decimal system with special library codes for subject or form.
For instance, family histories in Great Britain are 929.241,
and in the
United States are 929.273. The modified Dewey number
is given a
subject code, such as D2 for genealogy, D3 for biography,
V2 for vital
registration, etc." Steven M. Law, Supervisor of
the Germanic-Slavic Cataloging section of the Family History
Library, E-mail dated Friday, 07 Nov 2003, added a helpful listing
of the current classification, as follows:
A GENERAL WORKS
A1 Pamphlets
NOTE: A3-B5 are to be used for general works of an area,
with no
topical emphasis. If there is a topical emphasis,
prefer the
subject categories for that topic and add
the standard
subdivision for the format.

of concern to a society, prefer that subject.
D GENEALOGY, BIOGRAPHY, INSIGNIA
D2
Genealogy - Class here collected Bible records,
oral genealogy, etc.
D3

a country or smaller area. For individual biography,

of an area larger than a country, use 920.

Microfilm call numbers formerly
filed under GS are now listed
under FH, for Genealogical Society and now Family History
(library
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). "Further
numbers may be added [to] the Dewey number for local area.
The LDS Family History
Library also uses their own subject
heading system based on geographic area
and form, with a fairly
complicated system of subdivisions." . . . Roger Magneson also
suggested
checking "several levels of government when searching
for genealogical records:
national, state, county, and city, as
agencies responsible for vital records
varied over time and also
varies from country to country."
