Tenison, (Dr.) Thomas
Tennyson Family
Tennyson, Michael
Tennyson, Ralph
Tennyson, The Poet-Laureate [Alfred], (Lord)
Ralph Tennyson, who died in 1735, father of Michael Tennyson of
Preston, co. York [Yorkshire County, ENGLAND], is the first recorded
ancestor of the family of which the Poet-Laureate is so distinguished an
ornament.  There is, however, in the family a tradition of long-standing that
it descends from a collateral relative of Archbishop Tenison.  According to
Sir Bernard Burke's Landed Gentry, the families of Tenison, of Kilronan
Castle, and Tenison, of Port Nelligan, both of IRELAND, belong to the same
house as the archbishop.  If any of your numerous genealogical
correspondents can assist me to connect Ralph Tennyson with the family
of (Dr.) Thomas Tenison, I shall be much obliged.

CORRESPONDENCE: 1891/1892, in
The East Anglian; or Notes and Queries

Vol. IV, 1891-1892, page 367,
Reverend John Tenison, Rector of Downham (Ely), A.D. 1596. - - -
This is the John Tenison referred to in Mr. Mullinger's History of the
University of Cambridge (Vol. 2, pages 290-291, University Press 1884),
in connection with a dispute over his royal nomination for a Fellowship
at Peterhouse.  There was a petition against him, and the petitioners
said, "whereas, of late the thirds of his mother have fallen to him;
besides a lease yielding a yearly rent exceeding the rate of living allowed
by our statutes; having otherwise of certain worshipful friends, very
good and sufficient allowance by the year."  He subsequently became
Rector of Downham in the Isle of Ely.  His wife's name was Ann, and
he was grandfather of Archbishop Tenison.  I should be glad to know
who were his parents; who were the "worshipful friends", and any
circumstances connected with him, and the properties referred to, and
what was his wife's name and descent.

LETTERS: 11 July 1977, 16 Aug 1977 and 05 Aug 1979
I should have given you more information about my father [Milton W. Tinney;
died A.D. 1958].  The "Census of 1880: you talked about actually listed him twice:
(1) In Nueces County (Corpus Christi), [Texas, USA], where he and his mother
("Esequia") were apparently visitors of my Dad's uncle (Samuel);
(2) In Duval County (San Diego), Tex[as, USA], Dad is counted as living with his
father (Thomas [Tinney]) and mother (Rosa).  I found out only recently from an
aunt in Texas that Dad's mother's full name was "Rosa Esequia" - He of course was
born in A.D. 1878.  Anyway, my father lived in Corpus Christi most of his early years,
but spent a lot of time in San Diego and Benavides, living with relatives.  Duval County
was ranching country, primarily.  Dad was a newspaper printer ( mainly a linotypist and
proofreader) for over 50 years before his retirement.  He died in 1958.  He was well
traveled in following that occupation and worked all over the country.  For instance,
he married my mother after meeting her in Oklahoma, [USA], years ago.  I was born
in Dayton, [Montgomery County], Ohio, [USA], in A.D. 1921.  My brother in
Nashville and sisters in Nashville, Louisville and Tulsa.  A sister and I were raised in
Galveston, Texas by an aunt there.  After the War, I came back to Oklahoma to live.
-
My grandfather, Thomas [Tinney], was a pioneer resident of Corpus Christi and came
there along with his father (Edward B. [Tinney]), mother and brothers and sister in
A.D. 1853.  The family left Illinois and came by steamboat to New Orleans, eventually
reaching Corpus [Christi].  The town of Corpus Christi had been founded only a few
years before his arrival.  Grandpa served in the Civil War as a Confederate Officer,
becoming a newspaper publisher in the Corpus Christi area during the 1870s and 1880s.
-
My great-grandfather (Edward B. [Tinney]), separated from his first wife in A.D. 1855,
after reaching Texas.  He returned to New Orleans, [Louisiana, USA], where he married
his second wife, living in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, raising another family.  Before
migrating South, Edward lived in Pekin, Illinois, [USA], with his first family, and was
included in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Illinois.
-
Edward's father, Nathaniel [Tinney], left Petersburg, Virginia, [USA], after the
Revolutionary War and settled in Springfield (Washington County) Kentucky, [USA].
That's were my great-grandfather was born. . . .
-
My primary source, besides from what my father told me, is a biographical sketch
taken from the Old Settlers of Tazewell County.  This narrative was sent Dad by
relatives of William A. Tinney, who were still living (at that time - back in the 1940's),
in Pekin, Illinois.  You will note the references to Nathaniel [Tinney] and
Caroline Marshall.
-
In the History of Tazewell County, Illinois, published 1879, I find references to
John M. Tinney.  There is a reference to John M. Tinney who followed
William A. Tinney as the "coroner" in A.D. 1872, in Tazewell County.  John
also lived in Pekin during 1843-44, according to the book.  There are other references
to Charles, R. M., Nathaniel, Caroline (Marshall) and Sarah Jane (Yager). . . .
you refer to Nathaniel Tinney as a "surety" in the marriage [bond] of Polly Tinney to
Daniel Potts on 06 Dec 1791, at Petersburg, [Independent City], Virginia, [USA].
[Research Note: Petersburg Virginia is near or in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.  From
LDS FHC film # 029, 294 the Personal Property List of Dinwiddie County, Virginia,
for the years A.D. 1785 to A.D. 1790, shows:
A.D. 1788 - Tiney, John, as proprietor, also listed as:
John Tinney as above 16 years of age -1; and owned 2 horses.
A.D. 1789 - dated 13 June - Tinney, Thomas, as proprietor, also listed as above
16 years of age.  Thus, in A.D. 1791, when Nathaniel Tinney was Surety, there were
in the immediate area, two additional Tinney males over 16, John and Thomas Tinney.]

LETTER: 12 Oct 1980
I am interested in the Tinney line, because my great-grandmother was
Angeline Tinney, born circa 1822 in New York, USA.  She was married before
A.D. 1840 to Charles Benjamin High and they were living in Warren County,
New York when the U.S. 1840 Census was taken.  They had two sons at that time
and the households around them were also Tinney's.  Later, they lived in Troy,
New York, because I have records for two more sons, one of which was my
grandfather.  Angeline (Tinney) High, died 11 Aug 1889, Oconto County,
Wisconsin and is buried in the old Methodist Cemetery.  She was a widow in the
1880 U.S. Census.  Angeline (Tinney) High had six (6) children:
William Benjamin High, Lyman Tinney High, Charles Edward High,
George Washington High, Mertte High and Mary Elizabeth High.
In the same Court House record books, there is a record for Thomas Tinney-
he died 23 April 1891 and is buried in the Catholic cemetery in the City of Oconto,
Oconto County, Wisconsin.  He was married to Winifred Consgrove, daughter of
John Consgrove and Mary Bennett; she born 25 Dec 1838 in Ireland. . . .
A son named William Gregory Tinney was born 06 Mar 1872, Oconto, Wisconsin;
(died 13 June 1899 - taken from Deaths, Vol. 4, page 50).

My cousin Hilda Tinney, sent me the brochure . . . about the Tinney family.  We are
descendants of Thomas and Catherine D. Tinney, of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

[Found this in one of my research papersRichard Tiney, a soldier in the Revolutionary

came to Amboy Township in 1838.  The old soldier died soon afterwards and was buried
in the old Edgar Cemetery, South of Seward. . . .

Also, from another contact:
My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Ireland in the 1880's.  Both came
to Philadelphia in different years.  William Tinney and Sara Scott met and married in
Philadelphia.  They went west via covered wagon to Arizona and later Nebraska.  Had nine
children, but only two sons survived, William Tinney and Thomas Tinney.  At the turn of
the century, the family moved back East, so the sons could be educated in Eastern
Universities.  William Tinney graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, M.D.;
Thomas Tinney, B.A. from the University of Maryland.  Thomas Tinney taught at the
University of Maryland until a youthful death, due to a heart condition.  William Tinney
married Dorinda Musselman; they lived in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania;
they had two sons: William Scott Tinney and John Thomas Tinney.
I was sent the name and address of this Tinney:
John T. Tinney, 411 Cumberland Street, Lebanon, Pennsylvania 17042.
His brother, Dr. William S. Tinney, lives at 190 East Roseville Road, in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17604. Both wrote me very nice letters and Dr.
Tinney was so interested.  I have found Tinneys here locally in Framingham,
but English, and in the other parts of the State of Massachusetts, Irish; even one
Jewish Tinney, so it does cover much area.  I do thank you for the letter from
Mrs. Steward as we just might be relations and seem to both have the same
ancestors.]

I have a will probated 18 Feb 1782, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, [USA], for the
estate of John Temple of Caln, (born circa A.D. 1730, Chester County).  James Tinney
is the executor of this estate.  If the Levi Temple genealogy of the Temple family,
printed in A.D. 1901, is correct; then, this said James Tinney was either married to
Sarah Temple, at that time, or thereafter.  She was the daughter of John Temple,
deceased, in the estate.  I would very much like to correspond with any descendants
of this line.  I am also willing to exchange information with anyone researching the Temple
surname.

On behalf of the Tinney family I wish to acknowledge your
recent correspondence. . . . My father, the late
William James Tinney, was a master carpenter, with an
intelligent and creative mind. He also had musical ability -
he played the 'fiddle' in a dance band in his younger days
(long before my time). . . . I would be much obliged if you
could put me in touch with someone of our clan who is into
Creative Writing, so we could correspond.  Or, better still,
to come up with a musician/songwriter who would show
some interest in my lyrics.

I have written a genealogy of the descendants of George{4} Tinney/Tenney who lived
in Addison, Centerville, Columbia and Columbia Falls, Washington County, Maine, [USA].
If you are from George{4}, I am willing to correspond with you.  I have been a genealogist
for fifty-seven years [57] and have lots of data on the early families of Washington County,
Maine, where I was born and raised.
P.S.  Several of the Columbia/Columbia Falls families went West.

I have done very little research on my Tinney ancestors.  My great-great-grandmother
Martha Tinney, who lived at Monkton Combe, near Bath, was born in Kingsdon,
Somerset, ENGLAND, in A.D. 1816.  There have been Tinney's in that area from the
1600's.  I must get down to the Taunton Record Office and do some more work on
the Tinney family.

LETTER: 01 Sep 1989
I am only connected with the Tinney family through a marriage in A.D. 1845, when
a nephew of William Henry Tinney married a member of my family.  This Tinney
family came originally from South Barrow in Somerset, [ENGLAND], moving to
Gillingham in Dorset and then in around A.D. 1776 to Salisbury in Wiltshire,
[ENGLAND].
William Tinney, (father of William Henry Tinney), was a solicitor and had ten (10)
children; [only two (2) boys, John Pern Tinney and William Henry Tinney].
Neither John nor William had any surviving children.
In A.D. 1888, my great-grandfather (dad) was left 2,000 pound in the Will of a
Mrs. Anna Tinney, (wife of William Henry Tinney; [he having died in A.D. 1871]).
A John Tinney and his wife Ann were mentioned in the will, living in Cornwall,
[ENGLAND], so there may have been Tinney cousins in Gillingham, though I know
nothing of them.
If you are interested in more details, I could send you a copy of Mrs. Tinney's (T's)
Will.  [There were a few great nephews, nieces, etc.], and I have more details of
John Tinney, (William Henry Tinney's brother John Pern Tinney)John P. and
William H. were both solicitors; W. H. Tinney was a Barrister and spent most of his
life in London, [ENGLAND].
I also have a copy of a drawing of John Tinney and small photo of a drawing of
W. H. Tinney.  I look forward to hearing from you if you are interested in any of this.

LETTER: 19 May 1992, 22 Oct 1986 and 07 Oct 1986
Over the years I have written to many people in the hope that I may find a relative with
more information than I have.  I have enclosed the TINNEY Chart as far as my research
has proven.  [I wish to] continue to fine tune my chart and hopefully add some flesh to
the skeleton that I now have.  I am at the stage that I want to know where my ancestors
originated from, what they did, the type of life they lived, why they settled in Cornwall
and the like.  You are very welcome to include any of my research . . . I hate to think
that someone else has to go through the incredible cost, in time and money, that I, you
and all those that have given me information, have gone through, when it is unnecessary.
The Tinney I am researching is John Tinney of Tregenna Farm, St. Columb Minor,
Cornwall, England.  He and his wife Louisa had numerous children, two of which were:
Catherin Tinney, born 25 Sep 1842, and
Mary Tinney, born 28 Jan 1844.  These sisters married Grigg brothers, Harold Grigg
and Isaace Grigg, and all migrated to Australia on the "Great Australia", in A.D. 1862.
I am a descendant of Harold Grigg and Catherin Tinney

there are some branches in California.  Also, a month or so ago I received

Mortuary business along with his Grand Father and Father.  He is now a Masonry
contractor. He has done a bit of research of his own on the Tinney's and traced some
folks all the way back to ENGLAND.  I will try to get you some more details.  I work

I can't give you much information, but I can tell you that Tinney is a
family name from Middle and North Cornwall, [ENGLAND].  There are at least
several distinct Tinney families there, and part of the family oral history is that
emigration to the U.S. goes back to the 17th century.  My guess is that not all U.S.
Tinney's are from the same branch of the family.

Nice to here from another Tinney.  I've never met one, other than my Dad.
Maybe that's why, even though I've married, I've kept my maiden name.
My father is James Joseph Tinney and he is IRISH.  He was born 08 May 1914.
At the age of about 5 or 6 years, his mother and father either abandoned him and his
sister or they were killed in a car accident. The sister went to live with relatives in
a Pennsylvania, [USA] coal mining town, and he has never heard from her or them.
He was raised (in the Strattford/Lindenwald area of south New Jersey, around
Philadelphia, [USA]), by his aged (75 years old), but strong IRISH grandmother.
His grandmother cared for him and later visited him.  At 15 years, he started working
at Budd Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, [USA].  James Joseph Tinney
went to war; then, married Roberta M. Green from Berlin, New Jersey, [USA].
They had two girls.  My sister's name is Pamela Lynn Clark, born 13 Nov 1953.
She has four (4) children.  Dad developed Alzheimer's at about 45 years old, when
I was born. The little I know comes from my Mom.  I am: Diane Linda Tinney,
born 06 Feb 1960; married to James Dixon Keene, III.  My husband was born
25 Mar 1955.  We have one child:
David Zachary Keene, born 25 Jan 1990.
I would appreciate any leads or information you could pass on to me.

I know of my line.  Family tradition states my Tinney ancestry, at some point, came
from IRELAND, where they were known as O'Tinneys.  My earliest known ancestor was:

I have not attended many of the family re-unions in recent years.  I do not
know if you can get in touch with Aunt Sissy in San Antonio, Texas, [USA],
through E-Mail.   I have heard that she has done some research into our
family history.  In Austin, Texas, [USA], I have met some Tinneys who do
not seem to be closely related.  When I first moved here there were only three
Tinneys in the phone book.  I never contacted Patricia but George Tinney
contacted me.  I read his obituary a few years ago.  I knew he was elderly.
George Tinney informed me that he was a descendant of Samuel Tinney
who came to Texas with his brother William A. Tinney, our great grandfather.
I am a DBA with the Texas Youth Commission.

I work for Advanta Mortgage in San Diego.  My duties have nothing to do
with loans.  My background is in Purchasing and I handle the procurement
of equipment, furniture, forms, and supplies for this rapidly growing national company.
My Dad, John Tinney and his wife Jean live just a few miles away.
My brother Greg Tinney lives in town, too.  Brothers Matt Tinney and

It is stunning to find a Tinney site on the web. I have tried to find some useful
information about the origins of our name.  I am originally from SOUTH AFRICA
and now work as a graphic designer in London, ENGLAND.  One of my many
brothers in SOUTH AFRICA sent me your web address and said I should do some
browsing.  As a family we are interested in our history and have done some
extensive research.  Working backwards I have five (5) brothers and a sister.
My father was born in SOUTH AFRICA and his father was born in Cornwall,
ENGLAND.  They came from IRELAND where my father's mother was born.
From what little I do know we all started in IRELAND.

It's always interesting to see news, facts and information on the Tinney name.
I did a school project about 15-20 years ago on the Tinney lineage and was
able to get a pretty elaborate tree and history for us, from my grandfather
Daniel Edward Tinney who is now in his 70's and is still living and very
mentally intact.  My group of Tinneys came from IRELAND in the 1870's
and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, [USA].  From there, my great
grandparents settled in National Park, New Jersey, [USA] and we have grown
to a huge number.

My earliest known ancestor is John Tinney, Sr., born 11 June 1806 in either
Londonderry or Donegal, Ulster, IRELAND.  He was married 6 Feb. 1843,
New Albany, Floyd, Indiana, [USA], to Mary Johnson Henderson, a widow with

and was buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery on 3 May 1882.  He was a Ship Carpenter
and along with his descendants worked in the ship building industry at New Albany,
Indiana.  The family helped build the famous Robert E. Lee and other steamboats.
Later they worked on railroads.  I am James Tinney, the son of John Tinney, the
grandson of James Tinney, the great grandson of John Tinney, Jr., the 2nd great
grandson of John Tinney, Sr.  I go by my middle name of Paul, however.  I also

IRELAND/Donegal.  Thomas Tinney was born around the 1800s, presumably in Donegal.
My research done at The Register House in Edinburgh, has their son Hugh Tinney's death
certificate in 1870, with both parents not marked as being deceased.  If they were still alive,
in IRELAND, there is a chance their death certificates there might be recorded. This would
give me a location for them, which I need as a starting point.  Although my great-great
grandfather, Hugh Tinney, born A.D. 1828, emigrated to SCOTLAND, between 1846 and
1866, he could have had brothers or sisters who emigrated in the other direction, to the
United States.  Hugh Tinney's wife was Ann Arthur.  My great grandfather was
John Tinney, born 1866, in Dumbarton SCOTLAND.
I have noticed some of the journalist Steve Tinney's work on the Internet.

From: paulhahn@bc.sympatico.ca (Paul Hahn)
Having read the notice in the Cornwall Family History Society Journal,
I checked your enormous Tinney web site.  Now I am wondering
if you could help us with my wife's Cornish ancestors?  Her 3xgrandfather is:
Richard Tinney of St. Columb Minor, born 16 Feb 1807.  His father was:
Richard Tinney, born 08 Mar 1777, who married Ann Jacka of Colan 22 Dec 1804.
His father was:
Richard Tinny of St. Columb Minor, born 05 Oct 1745 who married Grace Stribly.
The next generation back is John Tinny who married Elisabeth Martyn of
St. Columb Minor 24 May 1740.  His father is possibly:
Richard Tinny who married Margaret Penvose 30 Jan 1702 at St. Columb Minor.
They christened a son John Tynny on 02 Feb 1703.
The question is, are we on the right track?  All data was taken from LDS films of
Cornish church records.  If you have actual Family trees of the
Tinneys (Tinnis, Tynnys) of St. Columb Minor, we would love to have a copy.

I'm particularly interested in discovering if there was a Saint Tinney

I went searching for an ancestor; I cannot find him still.
He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will.
He married where a courthouse burned.  He mended all his fences.
He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. Census.. . .

From: rgham@stripe.Colorado.edu (Richard "Dick" G. Ham)
Organization: MCDB University of Colorado, Boulder
As a Tenney descendant from a family that was probably Tinney earlier, I was
fascinated to discover your extensive data on the Tinney surname worldwide and
through history.  My branch of the Tinney family  settled in Washington County,
Maine, [USA].   My great grandfather was Philander W. Tenney, originally from
Centerville, Washington Co., Maine, born about 1843. His father was
Timothy Tenney, born about 1814.  The 1850 census shows an abundance of
Tenneys in Washington County, mostly in Centerville and Columbia Falls.
Previous census reports show a gradual shift from Tinney to Tenney in the early
1800s.  Most, if not all of the Tenneys in that region appear to be descendants of
George Tinney, who was an early settler in the area. He and his children are
described in some detail in Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 3, pages 275-276, edited
by Ruth Gray, Picton Press, 1992.  The book provides detailed information,
including the names of his parents, George's marriage in 1759 to Bethia Elwell,
in Falmouth, Cumberland County, Maine, the birth and marriage dates for all of
George's children.  [Please] add all available Tenney information from Washington
County, Maine, [USA].  There are actually still some living there today.  In addition,
several, including my ancestors moved west to Washington Territory in about 1888,
shortly before it became a state.  If you are interested, I would be happy to provide
the information that I have.
Perley Leighton (Perleyltn@aol.com), who does family
lookups through the Washington County, Maine GenWeb page, states that my lineage
is in fact descended from George Tinney, Sr., through his son Samuel Tinney/
Tenney and grandson Timothy TenneyPerley informed me of an 800+ page book
on "Early Pleasant River Families" by Leonard Tibbetts and Darryl Lamson,
published last year.  It can be ordered from Darryl (501 So. Mitchell St.,
Warrensburg, MO 64093 [USA]) for $59.50 postpaid.  He told me that it has twelve
[12] pages on the Tenneys/Tinneys and includes the entire lineage from the parents
of George Tinney, Sr. through the children of Philander Tenney, including my
grandmother, Laura Belle Tenney.  I have barely started on my own genealogy.
When my wife and I began pursuing family history, we decided to start with hers,
since doing both at once would be too time demanding (at least until I retire in another
year or two).  We are beginning to accumulate enough of her history so that we could
set up a web page (or set of pages).  Part of her ancestry is in Sweden, where the
records are fantastically detailed.

I am researching the O'Brien family who left IRELAND, around A.D. 1848 and settled
in Rutland County, Vermont, [USA].  I recently came upon some old letters that were
written to a Maggie Tinney who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, [USA], in the
1880-90's.  The letters were signed, your sister Bridget [O'Brien]. Bridget was born
in A.D. 1810 in IRELAND; she died in A.D. 1886, in Rutland, Vermont.  I found both
Maggie, and I assume her husband, Andrew,  in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the United
States Census of A.D. 1870.  I figured their birth dates to be circa 1830 for Maggie Tinney
and circa A.D. 1836 for Andrew.  They were both born in Ireland.  Please get back to me
if any of this sounds familiar to you.

I was reading your page on the internet and thought I would share with
you my Tinney ancestry.  My grandparents were Claire Marie Tinney,
who married Philip Luke Whitney, 28 of Apr 1919, at St. Martinville,
Louisiana, [USA].  Her parents were Stephen Douglas Tinney,
(commonly called "DaDa"), born 26 Aug 1860, Boutte, St. Charles Parish,
Louisiana, [USA], and Lelia Hortense Vitter, of Grand Coteau, Louisiana, [USA].
They were married 10 Feb 1891 at LaPlace, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana [USA].
Stephen Douglas Tinney's parents were Edward Benton Tinney, born
about 1813 in Pekin, Caswell County, Illinois, [USA], and Laura M. Beelman.
They were married 23 Dec 1860 in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, [USA].
Edward Benton Tinney's parents were Nathaniel Tinney, whom we believe is
from Virginia, and Caroline Marshall, who is another brick wall in our search.
My search ends abruptly there and I can't seem to go any further.  Anyway, I'm
happy to share what I know with you and your Tinney group.

Edward Benton Tinney (12 Feb 1813 - 20 Apr 1903), but from his wife
Sara Mary Berry.  As far as I can tell, ol'  Edward [Tinney] had three wives:
Sarah L. Wilson,  married 25 May 1833 (no children that I know of)
Sara Mary Berry, married 07 June 1837 (five children)
Laura M. Beelman, married __ ___ 1855  (ten children)

Edward & Sara's son William Archibald Tinney (05 Dec 1849 -
08 July 1924), was married (31 Jan 1875) to Candelaria Saenz (02 Feb 1860 -
July 12, 1934) and lived in Piedras Pintas, Duval Co., TX.  They had
8 children including my grandfather, Patrick Edward Tinney (13 Aug 1892 -
22 May 1949).  Patrick married Olive Champion (29 Dec 1900 -present),
had 6 children (including my dad - John), and raised Olive's son
from a previous marriage.  Olive lives in Kingsville, TX and will be 98
years young this year!

My grandmother was Claire Marie Tinney who was born at Lafourche
Crossing, Louisiana.  She married Philip Luke Whitney on 28 Apr 1919,
at St. Martinville, Louisiana.  She was the daughter of Stephen Douglas
Tinney (commonly referred to as "DaDa").  Stephen Douglas Tinney
was born 26 Aug 1860 at Boutte in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, and he
married Lelia Hortense Vitter of Grand Coteau, Louisiana, 10 Feb 1891,
LaPlace, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana.  Stephen Douglas [Tinney] was the
son of Edward Benton Tinney and Laura M. Beelman.  I have that
Edward Benton [Tinney] married Laura on 23 Dec 1860 in St. Charles Parish,
Louisiana.  Information from family sources says that he was born possibly
around 1813 in Pekin, Caswell County, Illinois, but I have not found verification of
this yet.  Laura was the daughter of John M. Beelman and Mary Frances Delico,
who were married on Long Island, New York, 07 May 1831, we believe. Their lines
stop suddenly at that point.  So far all I have is that Nathaniel Tinney was the father
of Edward Benton [Tinney] and was possibly from Virginia.  Nathaniel Tinney
married Caroline Marshall, whom I also cannot find ancestry on.  I do, however,
have a birthdate of 27 Apr 1770 for Caroline Marshall and a death date of
20 Nov ????.  I live in Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana.  In older records,
Thibodaux is sometimes referred to as Thibodauxville (pronounced Ti-baa-dough).
There are many, many, many descendants of Nathaniel Tinney and
Caroline Marshall, both here in Louisiana and all across the U.S.

Tinney Family Story: aTale of Two Charles Tinney's Free Family Story
Submitted by rebecca remington Date submitted Aug 11, 2007
[
Well, my great-great grandfather was Charles Aurther Tinney
(who was the son of Darwin Tinney and Manerva Duell in East Palmyra, NY)
Charles Aurther Tinney married a younger woman named Laura (Lottie Jane) Warren
from Lyons, Wayne County, NY. They had one child and named him Charles Jackson Tinney.
One day when Charles Jackson Tinney was a very young boy, his father went to work "...
and never came home" (...this is the exact quote that I recall my grandmother telling
me her grandmother had told to her when she had asked where her grandfather was.).
It turns out that Charles Aurther had drowned in the Erie Canal, just outside of
Lyons, Wayne County, NY. Sadly, he never got to watch his son, Charles Jackson, grow up.

Years later, when Charles Jackson Tinney had grown into a man,
he married one beautiful lady named Mrytie Belle Tinney. Charles Jackson Tinney worked
on the railroad near Buffalo, Erie County, NY. They had three daughters, of which one of them
was my grandmother. Then they had a little boy, my Uncle Fred. Uncle Fred was just a baby
when one day, his father when to work and never came home. Charles Jackson Tinney had
been crushed between two railroad cars and died about 1922.
Sadly, he never got to watch his son grow up either.]
